WEEK 2 ENGLISH 1101

English 1101 WEEK 2 Free Write

Today our English 1101 instructor gave us a to video watch and afterwards to write down anything that comes to mind.  The video was about a poem by Taylor Mali.  It was pretty interesting although nothing really came to my mind because I was hungry and it was about 2 or 3 hours after eating breakfast.  Although I could barley comprehend what Taylor Mali was saying, my ear caught the phrases talking about “what’s truth?” and “How can you claim that the truth is true?”.  All through out the clip there was a sardonic tone making the issue seem humorous but, with a little dusting of the surface, in actuality it reveals an issue that is profound.  Even though the video didn't emphasize much on the claim of supposed truths, this issue has for ages created divisions and controversy in the political offices and social lives of many, and it will always be a challenge to overcome.

  1. I'm interested, too, in how Taylor Mali uses humor to get to critical issues about language for example here. He seems to get to a broad audience doing this. I wonder if the genre invites critical discourse about language, for instance, or people just read it as entertainment... hmmm...

  2. You mentioned an interesting question, "What's truth?" Many people say truth is relative, that things can be "true" to one person, yet not to another. Which, I suppose could be true, if you don't have a standard from which to compare things. If, of course, you had something or someONE outside the realm of simple speculation on what's true or not, someone that knows everything and therefore can be the perfect judge, truth becomes absolute. ...haha just a thought ;)

  3. Johnny, it is interesting that you picked this to write about. When Lacy showed us the video in class I was very tired too and hungry! It seemed way over my head and honestly his voice was very annoying. I love the quote that you have posted. This really means a lot to me in the sense that you have to believe in yourself in everything you do and know that you can do anything. I also like the question, "What's truth?" How do we know that the truth is really the truth? Who decides if truth is the truth. This probably isn't making much sense, sorry. But I enjoyed reading your blog!
